Who may participate in the Teen Reading Club? Youth ages 11 to 18 who are entering grade 6 to grade 12 in the fall of 2008. You are not required to be a Joliet library card holder to participate.
When can I start participating in the Club?
You may begin reading and turning in reviews starting June 2. Please include your first and last names on the review forms.
How do I register?
Fill out the "Teen Quick Registration" form and drop it in the Teen Review box any time beginning June 2nd or after.
What can I win?
Weekly drawings* for $15 gift cards for place like Barnes & Noble and Best Buy are held at each library location. There will be one winner drawn from all of the reviews turned in during the prior week. See the list below for the weeks and dates.
*Black Road Branch drawings will be held some time during Thursday afternoon, and the Main library drawings will be held on Friday afternoons.
NOTE: You MUST pick up (or make other arrangements with the library staff) your gift card within one week of being notified that you are a winner. Please notify us immediately if your contact information changes during the summer.
Earn other prize** incentives for turning in your book reviews each week as follows:
Turn in 4 reviews (after first four reviews only) - Earn ONE (smaller) summer reading-themed prize
Turn in 7 reviews (after first seven reviews only) - Pick out ONE book to keep plus earn ONE Splash Station Party ticket
Turn in 10 Reviews AND participate at least 5 of the 7 weeks of the club - Earn ONE (larger) Summer Reading-Themed prize.
Remember, prizes are as available, and a certain prize may be limited in availability.
How many times can I earn these prizes?
One time each. You will not earn another book for every seven reviews you turn in.
What books can I review?
Review books you read during this summer. It is not acceptable to turn in reviews for every book you've already read since last summer's club ended!
You are encouraged to read and review fiction and/or nonfiction books that are at least a 5th grade level or higher. Adult books are acceptable. There are high interest/lower reading level titles (with reading levels 2 -4, such as the Orca books) geared specifically towards teens available. These are also acceptable.
What books are unacceptable to review for the Teen Club?
Arthur, Junie B. Jones, Magic Tree House and other like this that are intended for younger kids. Questions? Please ask.
Can I review manga or graphic novels?
Yes! Of course! Why not? In the review please write something about the book that is specific to that volume, and not just about the manga series in genreal. When writing down the title and author, be sure to include the volume number if it is a part of a series.
Can I listen to audio books, such as ebooks, Books on CD, and Playaway?
Yes!
Can I review the same book/title every week?
No. Please try to read different books!
